Recently, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk said that Ukraine will make a bid to join NATO. However, the reality is this will not happen.  Here are 5 reasons why:

1. People in eastern Ukraine will never support this move. To join NATO, all regions of a country must agree to their country joining NATO.

2. Such a move would escalate the current crisis, all but ending any chance for a long-lasting diplomatic solution.

3. Current NATO member states will not want to risk an all-out war with Russia over Ukraine.

4. Ukraine is too unstable.  NATO requires political stability and an absence of conflict in a country that wants to join. NATO does not want to import a fragile state like Ukraine into its alliance.

5. Russia will never allow it and will act to prevent it sees Ukraine in NATO as a fundamental threat to its national security.
