Senior French member of parliament and former minister, Thierry Mariani, criticized the EU decision to impose sanctions on Russia while speaking to the press in Moscow on Thursday.   He was speaking after meeting with Sergei Naryshkin, speaker of Russia's parliament, one of the most influential political leaders in Russia.

"I am not enthusiast by this politics of sanctions because if you see the history, every time you have sanctions, there is no result. You can find solutions with discussion, you can find solutions - like now - when the two government discuss together.

But, this politics of sanctions, honestly, it's a bad situation for European countries like France, for example."

He pointed out that the danger at the moment is not Russia but Islamic terrorism in the Middle East.

A new round of EU sanctions targeting the Russian finance, energy and defense sectors came into effect on Friday 12th September.
