Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier is fighting to get Russia back into the G-8. He doesn’t want Russia to be isolated long-term.

He represents this position alone, because German Chancellor Angela Merkel is siding with the U.S.-Neocons, and they're pushing for a harder course against Russia.

Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier is setting up the prospect of Russia's return into the G-8. The Minister said to the German Sunday newspaper Bild am Sonntag:

“If we can manage to clear more obstacles in the Ukraine conflict, and if Russia should continue cooperating with us on a solution for the Syria conflict, then the West should have no interest in continuing to bar Russia from the regular voting process between the major Western nations.

Our interest was never to isolate Russia nor to allow the G8 to become a G7 in the long-term."

According to Steinmeier, Russia is genuinely interested in a solution for the Syria conflict:

"We must not underestimate the fact that Russia, with its millions of Muslim inhabitants, feels seriously threatened by the developments in the Middle East.

Russia has no interest, I think, to wear itself out in Syria, through years of being drawn deeper into a war.

That's why I have the impression that Russia is actually looking for a way out of the Syrian catastrophe. "
