Among the most recognizable images of Russia, the matryoshka (or Russian doll) is certainly in the top three, behind perhaps only the Kremlin and Red Square. Hardly anyone has ever returned from Russia without a matryoshka in their suitcase.

The Russian doll is widely known all over the world, but in contrast to another famous doll, Barbie, matryoshka has nationality and is more than just a souvenir or a toy - it reflects the whole image of Russia.

A lovely Russian doll with big eyes and chubby cheeks red from cold wearing traditional garments - this is an old classic look of Russian women. It contains many smaller dolls inside and implies the idea of health, maternity and wellbeing.

And of course it’s like a reminder to everyone that you shouldn’t judge by appearance: beneath the exterior can be hidden much more than you expect.
