Casting doubt on Western media’s horror stories of tourism in Russia, and long standing misconceptions, Russia has improved by 18 places to rank respectably 45th out of 141 economies in the World Economic Forum's Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index.

The report measures the level of attractiveness for business development in the travel and tourism industry of the particular countries.

Cultural capital Saint Petersburg, resource and history rich Tatarstan, and the Black Sea region of Krasnodar have ranked as the favourite Russia tourist destinations in 2015.

Expectedly, Russia ranked even better in the natural resources category, coming 34th, and cultural resources 21st in the world.

The depreciation of ruble at the beginning of the year increased Russia’s price competitiveness ranking to 41st, which is another positive outcome of the Western sanctions. Chinese tourism to Russia more than doubled in the first quarter comparing to the same time last year.

There is always room for improvement, particularly in road infrastructure which is a major problem in the country. In the safety and security ranking Russia came only 126th, while business environment and environmental sustainability ranked 109th and 106th respectively.
