Saudi Arabia Halts Trade With Iran, Insists It Should Be 'Applauded Not Criticized' For Executions

Incredible hubris

For the love of Allah. When we reported earlier today that Saudi Arabia had cut all diplomatic ties with Iran, we figured that Riyadh would quickly come to its senses. Nope.

Here's the latest installment of "we're Saudi Arabia and we do what we want":

Saudi Arabia widened its rift with Iran on Monday, saying it would end air traffic and trade links with the Islamic republic and demanding that Tehran must "act like a normal country" before it would restore severed diplomatic relations.

Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told Reuters in an interview that Tehran was responsible for rising tensions after the kingdom executed Shi'ite Muslim cleric Nimr al-Nimr on Saturday, describing him as a terrorist.

Just for good measure, the Saudis called up their Sunni pals for some backup:

A number of Saudi Arabia's allies have joined diplomatic action against Iran after the Saudi embassy in Tehran was attacked amid a row over the execution of a Shia Muslim cleric.

Bahrain and Sudan have both severed relations with Iran, and the UAE has downgraded its diplomatic team.

(Interesting note about Bahrain: It has a Shia majority controlled by a brutal Sunni dictatorship/royal family/whatever. So we're sure this move is going to go over well with its already pissed-off population.)

And here's the money quote:

However, [Foreign Minister Adel] Jubeir said Saudi Arabia had been right to execute Nimr, whom he accused of "agitating, organising cells, providing them with weapons and money". After listing the crimes of 43 al Qaeda members also put to death on Saturday alongside four Shi'ites, Jubeir said of the executions: "We should be applauded for this, not criticised."

Yeah. After all, the Saudis are certified U.N. human rights experts. The whole world should adopt Saudi Arabia's impeccable justice system, "guilty until your head is lobbed off."

This is obviously just the beginning of Saudi Arabia's descent into crybaby hysteria. Stay tuned!
