Contrary to common belief, Russia has more traditional drinks than just well-known vodka. One of them, kvass, which also exists in other Slavic countries, played an important role in everyday life of Russians from as far back as at least the 10th century!

This malt drink (yes it’s malt, but it’s not a beer!) was indispensable in old Russia. It used to be an obligatory beverage while receiving guests (like bread and salt). Also, many people believed that this drink possess healing qualities: it removed fatigue, cured illness, and even helped to recover from hangovers!

Being a light alcoholic drink in the old days, it turned into an everyday soft beverage for everyone. It’s hard to find something more traditional and authentic in Russian cuisine than kvass - in summer it even becomes a main ingredient for a cold soup called ‘okroshka’.
