This Russian mixed-martial arts fighter has a massive following around the world.  He is a mega-star in Japan, the Middle East, fight-crazy Mexico, and many other countries, including the US.

He is, without a doubt, Russia's most famous, and most loved sports figure, both inside and outside the country.  What he has achieved in his career is considered near impossible.

But in addition to that, he is beloved because of his unusual public persona, the attitude and ethics he projects.  This, in particular, resonates with fans around the world.

In addition to this he is a devout Russian Orthodox Christian, and speaks frequently about how his faith forms his attitudes towards his sport.

He is this generation's Muhammad Ali.

To understand his mystique, it is well worth watching this excellent American documentary film about him from HDnet.

It has fascinating footage of his provincial hometown where he still lives, his workout routines, his faith, his life philosophy, his friendships and lifestyle (very low key - in contrast to the flash typical of big fight stars).

Here is a recent article about him from the American MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) Country magazine, discussing the unique status and respect he holds around the world.
