South Stream, Putin's Greatest Magic Trick

  • Every great magic trick consists of three parts: the Pledge, the Turn, and the Prestige

Every great magic trick consists of three parts or acts.

The first part is called "The Pledge". The magician shows you something ordinary: a deck of cards, a bird or a man. He shows you this object. Perhaps he asks you to inspect it to see if it is indeed real, unaltered, normal. But of course... it probably isn't.

Ukraine, the Pledge. A country stitched together over decades past, and held together with a very loose thread. After the fall of the Soviet Union, Ukraine seemed real, normal, doable.

The US, however, always had its eye on destabilising what it perceived as Russia's weak underbelly. Occupy Ukraine and you are one step closer to destroying Russia. This was the geo-political logic championed by Zbigniew Brzezinski.

Ukraine was, for a time, the energy bridge between Russia and Europe. If it could adhere to international law and practice proper business ethics, it's position as a stabile and secure energy transit hub was assured.

Unfortunately, over many years, and colored revolutions that followed, Ukraine failed to stave off Western saboteurs, eager to tear the nation apart at it's seams. Its position as a secure energy conduit was torn into shreds, turning Ukraine into an energy transit liability.

Ukraine looked real, unaltered, normal. But of was not to be.

The second act is called "The Turn". The magician takes the ordinary something and makes it do something extraordinary. Now you're looking for the secret... but you won't find it, because of course you're not really looking. You don't really want to know. You want to be fooled. But you wouldn't clap yet.

Enter South Stream, the Turn. The gas pipeline that would go around, what was an unreliable and unstable Ukraine, to deliver gas directly to South Europe's doorstep.

The simplicity and logic in relying on Ukraine to fulfil Europe's energy needs was not to be. The ordinary approach had to be altered and adjusted.

South Stream was that alteration. A viable alternative solution to what had become an unreliable overland route. It was an extraordinary project that would not only guarantee cheap and secure energy to Europe for decades to come, but would also work its magic on many of South Europe's anaemic economies.

South Stream was exactly what Europe problem solved.

America and their European stooges had another trick in mind. Destroy South Stream, occupy and control Ukraine, and cut off Russia's energy interests in Europe.

Eventually US gas, direct from America, or moved up through, a soon to be western friendly Syria, would lock in the European energy market to the petrodollar once and for all.

The big win was assured when Putin finally called off the South Stream project. The Western press basked in their glorious victory. Brussels fulfilled their master's bidding perfectly. It was game over. There was no other energy alternative to South Stream. No other energy transit route other than Ukraine.

Finish the occupation, nazification, and Russophobia of Ukraine, and America, Germany and Brussels would now control the energy distribution map of a land mass stretching form the Middle East all the way to Kharkov.

Hubris, arrogance, or just plain stupidity. The west believed its own propaganda. Bulgaria believed in the EU's third energy package sleight of hand.

Maybe they really did believe in their inevitable victory over Russia, or maybe, just maybe, western leaders were not really looking at the grand chessboard. Fooling oneself is all part of a great magic trick.

Because making something disappear isn't enough; you have to bring it back. That's why every magic trick has a third act, the hardest part, the part we call "The Prestige".

South Stream disappeared. Russian energy to South Europe vanished. Ukraine was now the only game in town, and under US occupation, Russia had been checkmated.

Putin did indeed make South Stream go away to much of the delight of the US, Brussels and Western Main Stream Media.

But every great magic trick consists of three parts or acts...And making something disappear isn't enough; you have to bring it back.

Ladies and gentlemen, Turk Stream. The Prestige! Applause...

Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller:

"Yes, in fact, the role of Ukraine as a transit country is reduced to zero.
The decision to stop the 'South Stream' is a beginning of the end of our business model, when we focused on the delivery to a final consumer in the European market.
In fact, we will provide the amount that Ukraine needs for its domestic consumption.
Deliveries to Europe will be made by alternative routes. European countries will have to purchase gas on the border of Turkey and Greece. Everything stays in the house."

Ukraine's strategic energy position, gone.
Gas delivered direct to Europe's doorstep, no more.
Easy money in Bulgaria's coffers, vanished.
Energy pipelined from Qatar and Saudi Arabia, poof!
American and Canadian LNG shipped to Europe, no chance.

That, ladies and gents, is how great magic is done.
