Reports: ISIS Retakes Palmyra

The SAA pulls back from Palmyra after thousands of ISIS fighters storm the city

Thousands of ISIS fighters have stormed Palmyra, forcing the Syrian army to withdraw, according to multiple sources.

While the majority of SAA troops have regrouped outside the city, there are still pockets of resistance:

In an earlier assault on the city, ISIS had been forced to pull back under heavy bombardment from the Russian air force.

Even if temporary, this is a major loss for Syria.

The liberation of Palmyra was hailed as a major victory for Assad and his international allies. Although a serious blow, the Syrian army is expected to mount a swift counter-attack. According to reports, ISIS has already suffered heavy casualties in its push to take the city:
