Putin says US missile strikes violate international law and will have consequences
Russian President Vladimir Putin regards the US missile strikes against Syria "as aggression against a sovereign nation,” according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
Peskov also noted that Putin believes the strikes are “in violation of international law, and also under an invented pretext.”
Putin knows what's going on here.
No Russian soldiers were killed or injured in the attack, but that misses the point entirely: It's an act of war directed at an ally that Russia has been fighting alongside with since September, 2015.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry:
According to Peskov, the missile strikes will further "damage" US-Russia relations, and will have consequences.
We expect Russia will respond with serious asymmetric warfare or even undisguised acts of retaliation — entire armies of "moderate" rebels evaporating overnight. Etc.
But Russia has a host of options on the table.
As always, Putin is keeping his cards close to his chest.
