Putin Faces Major Political Crisis: Angry Russians Demand Dissolution of National Football Team

People are tired of disgrace. Will the President make the decision himself or delegate it to sports officials?

Russians have run out of patience: the citizens of the Russian Federation demand the national football team be dissolved.

The petition appeared on the website Charge.org, addressed to President Vladimir Putin personally. It demands the immediate dissolution of the national football team for ‘frustrated hopes’. A record 17,500 people have already signed the petition at the time of writing. It reads:

“To dissolve the Russia national football team’s existing squad for frustrated hopes. To recruit a new team; to build football fields and take care of the rising generation on ‘saved’ money.”

The author of the petition, Anton Khasanov lives in Tyumen. He got an immediate response from a huge group of people who agree with him.
Russian support for the petition on dissolution is mainly due to the crushing 0:3 defeat of the Russian national team by Wales at the Euro-2016 championship.

Most people think it’s unreasonable to spend millions on the team that falls short of expectations, at least partially. According to fans, the defeat to a team from an ‘island’s region’, as they say, discredits the idea of hosting the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
