No, Trump, No Need for a Nuclear Arms Race

Let's hope this just the result of receiving some bad advice.

Campaigning in Atlanta, Georgia, Donald Trump said that US nuclear capabilities are far behind those of Russia.

“Our nuclear is old,” he said. “Putin’s is tippy-top, from what I hear. We’ve got to be careful.”

Here’s a comment by Victor Baranets, the military correspondent for Russia’s most popular news source, Komsomolskaya Pravda, and one of the most respected military observers.

The statement by US presidential nominee Donald Trump that Russia has a higher nuclear potential than the US shows that words can serve to incite trouble rather than state the real situation regarding America’s nuclear arsenal.

The US is still ahead of Russia in terms of the number of missiles, or warheads; although according to the latest Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, START II, and the New START, we achieved parity with the United States. I repeat, in terms of both number of missiles and warheads, today America really takes the lead over Russia.

True, the warranty period of many US nuclear weapons is almost expired. However, the Pentagon continues to refurbish and modernize them. Here are the facts: the Pentagon is planning to modernize nuclear bombs in Germany to be used by strategic bombers.

Missiles and warheads of nuclear-powered submarines of the US Navy are being modernized and refurbished. America has about eight times as many submarines as the Russian Federation. Ground-based missiles are also being modernized.

So we can say that the US has one-third old-design missiles, but they are being refurbished.

So why does Trump make such a bold statement? Clearly, it’s about the election. Trump is sending a signal to America’s military that he will change this situation if he becomes president. Americans love this type of statement, because they believe they are the best and strongest.

But Trump is absolutely right to say that in recent years, the armed forces of the Russian Federation have been up-graded. And he is right to say that Putin is implementing very effective military reforms, re-equipping the army with the most up-to-date systems, including, of course, nuclear weapons.

Over the last 2-3 years, Russia has produced arms that, for example, negate Europe’s missile defenses. Russian scientists have designed systems that make minced meat of it. Lastly, yes, we do revamp our nuclear missile weapons according to plan, our nuclear missile systems are the best in the world. But it’s not an arms race, or a nuclear missile race, just a planned renovation of our existing nuclear potential.
