Vladimir Putin in a surprise announcement, has ordered Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu to begin withdrawing Russian forces from Syria starting tomorrow, March 15. RT reported that Putin considers the military objectives of the mission fulfilled:

“I consider the objectives that have been set for the Defense Ministry to be generally accomplished. That is why I order to start withdrawal of the main part of our military group from the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic starting from tomorrow,” Putin said on Monday during a meeting with Shoigu and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

According to the Washington Post, the Russian president made the decision to help stimulate ongoing peace negotiations. He also reportedly said that the withdrawal would not close Russia's naval base at Tartus or its air base at Latakia, which would continue to operate.

The exact extent of the withdrawal and whether it will bring an immediate halt to Russian air operations remains to be seen.
