In a new global study by luggage storage provider Stasher, Russia’s Sheremetyevo International Airport has been revealed to be the most punctual airport in the world with the least flight delays, compared to 105 of the world’s other biggest airports.

In the study, Sheremetyevo was the only airport with less than 10 percent of delayed flights over a year. Just 6 percent of flights were delayed for longer than 15 minutes.

Sheremetyevo International is also ranked as the overall best airport in the world in Stasher’s study, receiving top scores for key categories including affordable parking costs, airport hotel quality and the number of lounges it offers passengers.

The airport celebrates the 60th anniversary of the opening on August 11, 2019. In recent years, Sheremetyevo has made several improvements including faster Wi-Fidesign features and a new terminal.

Other factors which were considered include customer feedback, quality of food outlets, access to shops and distance to the city centre alongside other indicators.

Soekarno- Hatta International airport in Indonesia has the highest number of delayed flights in the world, followed by The Philippines’ Ninoy Aquinto Airport in Manila in third place and Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Vietnam in sixth.

These results could be due to South-East Asia’s growing number of business travellers and tourists and the related infrastructure, which has failed to keep up with this surge in demand.

Those travelling around Europe are also likely to face long waits, as six of the worst performing airports are located on the continent.

In 2018 an investigation revealed Stansted to be the worst airport in the UK for flight delays. Stansted blamed this on "adverse weather and air traffic control issues”. However, it also comes second globally for the highest number of delays (2.59) in Stasher’s most recent study.
