According to polls, 51 percent of Germans support Russia’s military engagement in Syria. Corresponding figures in the United Kingdom and the U.S. were 42 percent and 35 percent respectively. In Turkey, however, most of the people interviewed voted strictly against Moscow’s war on terror – just 17 percent were positive, and 64 percent were against Russian military engagement.

The survey, which was conducted by the British polling organisation “Populus” on behalf of news agency Sputnik News and SNA radio, revealed that most people interviewed in the various countries were quite up to date when it comes to the Russian military mission in Syria.

When asked the question, „Do you know about Russia’s military mission in Syria?“, ninety percent of the people interviewed in the U.K. answered  positively.  There were similar results in Turkey and Germany – in each case 87 percent of the answers were positive. The results were high in the U.S. – 74 percent.  Twenty-six percent of Americans interviewed knew nothing about the issue.

Most Germans (63 percent), half of the Brits (50 percent), and nearly one third of U.S. Americans (30 percent), – having knowledge of the Russian mission in Syria, condemned the Turkish ambush and downing of a Russian fighter aircraft. In Turkey, however, 71 percent of the people interviewed supported the shoot-down of the Russian plane.

The “Populus” poll was conducted in December, 2015 and 4,083 persons were interviewed in four countries  –  U.K. (1067), the U.S. (1005), Germany (1005), and Turkey (1006). As for the participants, both men and women of varying age groups and religion were interviewed. The rate of error was taken into account at approximately 3.1 percent, and the confidence probability was 95 percent.
