Supported by the Russian air force, the Syrian army is making gains against ISIS on many fronts, liberating new towns and villages. It recently took control of significant parts of Syria’s “Northern Gates” along the Turkish border, through which jihadists were getting reinforcements in manpower and ammunition. In the south, the Syrian military are advancing toward the border with Jordan.

The liberation of the small town of Arabya and its adjacent villages has a special significance. It was the base of the Turkoman tribes that had shot a Russian pilot in mid-air after his SU-24 bomber was shot down by a Turkish fighter jet.

“Desert Falcons”, a Syrian special unit that led the charge had a portrait of the pilot, Oleg Peshkov, on their t-shirts. They said: “We have not forgotten and have not forgiven this crime, and now the death of a hero is revenged.”
