Deep State Pushing for Permanent US Military Presence in Syria

The neocons in both the Republican and Democratic parties, disappointed by the limited nature of President Trump’s recent airstrikes on three Syrian "chemical facilities", are calling for a permanent occupation under the friendly-sounding phrase “comprehensive strategy”.

At least 20 lawmakers have repeated the phrase in recent tweets, which could not be a mere coincidence but rather a sign of the Deep State at work.

Despite the US’s insistence that it intends to pull troops out of Syria, local media reported that the US has set up a new military facility in Eastern Deir Ezzor, close to ISIS’s last major stronghold in the war-torn country. The region is known for being rich in oil, Fars news agency reported, citing the Arabic-language Orient news website.

According to the reports, the new base is located in the al-Tanak oilfield, and controlled by Kurdish forces. Form their new outpost, American personnel have been ferrying new supplies to the front from the town of Khasham, in southeastern Deir Ezzor, to the city of Hosseinieh, situated in the northeast.

The White House insisted that US troops should return from Syria, after Emmanuel Macron said he had convinced the US President to keep a US presence there for “the long term”.

News of the new base follows airstrikes carried out by a US-led coalition on Friday. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, most of the more than 100 missiles fired at Syria missed their target.

The Pentagon has said they destroyed three facilities that were integral to the Syrian regime’s “chemical weapons program”. But if the US knew Syria was manufacturing chemical weapons in the buildings they bombed, why did they not notify the Organization for the Prevention of Chemical Weapons earlier?

Meanwhile, Russia has said it has irrefutable evidence that the chemical weapons attack was staged, and it has been corroborated by several journalists visiting the site. Agence France-Presse (AFP), the world’s third largest news agency, questioned whether chlorine or any other chemical was used at all in a French language video report.

A medical student present told AFP: “They [the victims] showed no symptoms of a chemical attack. But some foreigners entered while we were in a state of chaos and sprinkled people with water, and some of them were even filming it.”

A report aired by the German RTL Group-owned channel n-tv says it’s unclear whether the attack took place at all. A local doctor told the channel: “Saturday, a week ago, we treated people with breathing problems, but chlorine or gas poisoning – no, those are different symptoms.”

The cruise missile attack diverted the American public’s attention away from Trump’s personal attorney being raided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a sex scandal involving Trump and a porn actress, and a “tell-all” book by Trump’s fired FBI director, James Comey.

Russia has now found evidence that some rebel groups are in possession of chemical weapons, as OPCW inspectors finally arrive in Douma to begin their investigation into the alleged chemical weapon attack. The rebels have been in possession of chemical weapons since at least 2013.

The current Director-General of the OPCW is the Turkish career diplomat Ahmed Üzümcü who earlier served as the Turkish Permanent Representative to NATO.
