Coming to the Bolshoi this Thursday, a single performance of “Diana Vishneva: On The Edge” featuring one of the world’s finest dancers in her return to Moscow from performances in the Monte Carlo, the US, and St. Petersburg. Vishneva, renown for her dazzling technique and athletic intensity, performs for the Moscow audience the Jean-Christophe and Carolyn Carlson choreographed program.

The relatively short program on Bolshoi’s new stage, is intended to reveal not only the immeasurable physical abilities of Vishneva, but also to delve deeper into the star’s diva qualities. Added to this friction of athleticism atop sensuality, the theme of the program takes another ironic twist in revealing the dichotomy that is prima ballerina and woman.

Vishneva, whose repertoire includes Don Quixote, Romeo and Juliet, La Bayadère, Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, and The Firebird (to name a few) performs the twain bill of Jean-Christophe’s “Switch” and Carolyn Carlson’s (seen below with Vishneva) “Woman in a Room” before a sold out house this week.

Born in Leningrad (St. Petersburg) Vishneva trained at the Vaganova Academy and later joined the Mariinsky Theater in 1995. She is the principal dancer not only at the renowned St. Petersburg ballet, but also at the American Ballet Theater. Her accolades and awards include; People´s Artist of Russia (2007), the Benois de la Danse prize (1996), the Golden Sofit (1996), the Baltika prize (1998), the Golden Mask (2001), the Dancer of Europe 2002 prize, Ballet magazine prize (2003), and having been the recipient of Recipient of Russia’s Golden Mask theatre prize on numerous occasions. This latest production brings out Vishneva’s curiosity and sense of adventure that seems to empower her continual success. This is illustrated in a recent LA Times review in which critics Sergei Loiko and Susan Reiter reported:

“Vishneva, 37, consistently seeks out and creates opportunities to work with contemporary choreographers who work far outside her comfort zone.”

Presented by Ardani Artists, the company founded by Sergei and Gaiane Danilian, "Diana Vishneva: On the Edge" will travel to the London Coliseum April 14, 16, and 18, for those unable to get Bolshoi tickets will be in the UK. Vishneva’s next Moscow performance will be in Diana – 20, May 11th, also at the Bolshoi.

Performed by Diana Vishneva, Bernice Coppieters, Gaetan Morlotti, “Diana Vishneva: On The Edge” features the magnificent music of Academy Award nominated and Emmy Award winning composer Danny Elfman.
