Gunmen opened fire on buses taking a group of Coptic Christians to a monastery south of Cairo, according to Egyptian officials. 

The Egyptian health ministry said that 24 were killed and 24 were wounded in the attack. 

Egyptian media reported Friday morning that 10 gunmen opened fire on the group, which was heading to the Anba Samuel monastery.

Coptic Christians have been the target of numerous attacks over the last six months. According to Reuters, about 70 have been killed in bomb attacks on churches in the cities of Cairo, Alexandria and Tanta since December.
