PM Yatsenyuk: No Military Solution to Ukraine War

The normally combative Ukraine PM talks up importance of peace for Europe, tones down saber rattling

Statement should be read as meaning Yatsenyuk wouldn't stand in the way of peace brokered by his western backers.

KIEV, February 6 (TASS) - Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said on Friday that there was no classical military solution to the Ukraine conflict.

"What’s happening in Ukraine today is a threat to the European Union, NATO countries and the whole world. It is absolutely clear that Europe needs peace, which depends on peace in Ukraine," Yatsenyuk told a briefing held jointly with Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico.

"To achieve peace, Ukraine should have an opportunity to defend itself in a defensive rather than offensive operation," the Ukrainian premier stressed.

"We understand that there is no classical military solution to the conflict. No one wants a full-scale war in Europe," Yatsenyuk added.
