Over the years I’ve owned Harleys, Moto Guzzi’s, a BSA and a Ural, all good motorcycles. These machines sparked up my life, were fun, freeing up most traffic jams, or easily finding an available parking space be it in New York City or Moscow. Nevertheless, time and again over the years I have wondered what a joy it would to hop over road gridlock and land where you wanted.

As if to answer my exact wish, on Feb 16, 2017 a crowdfunded, innovative company here in Moscow called “Hoversurf” unveiled and successfully flew a single-seat hoverbike, named the Scorpion-S. It seems this is a world first in successful one-man operator-controlled “fly-cycling”. Powered by both electricity and a hybrid battery, it can reach speeds up to 50 kilometers per hour with a flight time of 27 minutes. No doubt in time both will increase!

The goal from the start was to create a machine that would be as simple to operate as riding a bike. It combines electrically powered quadcopter drone technology with a motorcycle seat, putting speed, agility and flight stability directly in your hands as you power through the air. Hopping and cruising over gridlock is no longer a daydream.

As the creators say: “We dedicated a lot of resources and efforts to R&D achieving that the unit’s size and shape to resemble a compact dirt bike. The design of SCORPION platform was inspired by heavy-duty sport-utility motorbike frames and the concept was combined with flight qualities providing speed and maneuverability. The machine basically surfs through the air by changing altitude and direction.”

Aside from being a fun way to get around, just consider the wide array of applications. Who would have thought that the first real “Air Hog” would be born in Russia and not at Harley-Davidson?
