The prevailing narrative in the west is that East Ukraine rebels were on the verge of being militarily defeated when they were bailed out by a Russian covert invasion in late August.

One thing that belies that story is that throughout the fighting in July and August rebels were repeatedly able to cut off, starve and destroy large advancing Ukraine units.

These actions netted them large numbers of prisoners of war. Far larger than they were losing themselves.
